Retired Army Master Sergeant Carl W. Winger, 68, of Farmer City peacefully passed away at 9:59 am Saturday July 29, 2023 at Warner Hospital and Health Services in Farmer City. Burial will take place in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. Rosenbaum Funeral Home in Gibson City is assisting the family with the arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to the Leroy Ambulance Service.
Carl was born May 11, 1955 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, son of Earl and Adele Kleist Winger. He married Constance Illig with whom he had 2 children. He later married Sue Brining on December 1, 1981 in Chicago.
He is survived by his wife and best friend of forty-one years Sue Winger of Farmer City. Three children Stephanie (Jon) Winkelhake of Sheboygan, Wisconsin; Paul (Tamika) Winger of Watertown, Wisconsin and Jennifer (Joshua) Purkiss of North Pole, Alaska. Five grandchildren David Sabrowsky of Sheboygan WI, Tyler (Taylor Parr) Buehler of Sheboygan Falls WI, Kya and AJ Winger both of Watertown WI, Anya Purkiss of North Pole AK and his sister Betty Winger of Waukesha, WI. Long time family friend and care giver Jon Miller, who helped brighten the darkest days, listening without judgment and being there when needed every day no questions asked.
Carl retired from the United States Army in January of 1994. He was a Nuclear Biological Chemical Specialist who spent time with the UN in Iraq destroying chemical weapons after the first Gulf War. He was also a Veteran of the Vietnam War at the beginning of his 20 years of service to his country.
