Gibson City - Anita M. Meyer, 87, of Gibson City, died at 2:45 pm Sunday October 14, 2018 at her home surrounded by her loving husband and children. She was born October 1, 1931 in Chicago, a daughter of Emeterio and Natividad (Silva) Magana, the third of five children.
Visitation will be held 5:00-8:00 pm Friday October 19, 2018 at Father Kirk Memorial Hall in Gibson City followed by a prayer service led by Deacon Bill Meyer. Funeral mass will be 10:00 am Saturday October 20, 2018 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Dong van Bui as the celebrant. Burial will be in Drummer Township Cemetery in Gibson City. Rosenbaum Funeral Home in Gibson City is assisting the family with arrangements.
Anita married James R. Meyer DVM on June 18, 1955 in Champaign. He survives. Her daughter Rae Ann is deceased, her children are,Nina (Michael) Whitman of Savoy and their children, Synthia, Blaze and Leo; and Angel Glahn of ElPaso. A son, James (Anet) Meyer and their son Jacob of Tustin, CA. Daughter, Elise (Mike) Marren and their children Tom and Megan Marren of Chicago. Also survived by her siblings, Lupe Magana, Dave Magana and Josephine Schenk. She was preceded in death by a brother Leonard.
Anita attended the Illinois Institute of Technology of Chicago, Wilson Junior College in Chicago and the University of Illinois in Champaign graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree. With a background in psychology and a teaching certificate, she successfully taught special needs students in Urbana for two years, while at the same time earning a Master's Degree in Education from the University of Illinois. Upon settling in Gibson City, Anita taught fifth grade classes until the birth of her first child, Rae Ann, when she became a full-time mom. Her plans to return to teaching were put on hold indefinitely when Rae Ann suffered a severe brain injury from a fall. She spent the next decade helping her daughter through rehabilitation, involving up to eight hours of therapy daily. Through her efforts, Rae Ann relearned to see, speak, walk and eventually become self-sufficient, earning an Associate's Degree from Parkland College in Champaign.
Mrs. Meyer was an active member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and was past president of the Council of Catholic Women. She loved to read. Especially books involving self-improvement, health and nutrition. Anita had a special interest in understanding and following the stock market. As a member of the International Flying Farmers, Anita spent many hours flying with her husband across North America and even abroad. Memorial tributes may be made to Shepherd's Closet, Moyer District Library or TELECARE.
